What is Multaq ?
Multaq (dronedarone) is a prescription medication used to help reduce the risk of hospitalization in adults with certain types of atrial fibrillation (AFib). It works by helping maintain a normal heart rhythm and is typically prescribed for patients with a history of intermittent or persistent AFib who are currently in normal sinus rhythm.
Multaq (dronedarone) is an antiarrhythmic medication prescribed to help manage certain types of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm disorder that causes the heart to beat irregularly. It is used in adults with paroxysmal or persistent AFib who have returned to normal sinus rhythm and is intended to help reduce the likelihood of future episodes while lowering the risk of cardiovascular hospitalization.
Dronedarone works by affecting the electrical signals that control the heartbeat, helping the heart maintain a more regular rhythm. Unlike medications that simply slow the heart rate, Multaq is designed to help stabilize the heart's rhythm and reduce the recurrence of AFib episodes in appropriate patients. It is often used alongside other treatments, including blood thinners, blood pressure medications, and lifestyle modifications recommended by a healthcare provider.
Multaq is typically taken twice daily with meals to improve absorption and maintain consistent medication levels in the body. Regular follow-up appointments, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and blood tests may be recommended to monitor heart rhythm and assess liver and kidney function during treatment.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, weakness, and skin rash. Although uncommon, Multaq can cause serious side effects, including liver injury, worsening heart failure, and changes in heart rhythm. Because of these risks, it is not recommended for patients with permanent atrial fibrillation or those with severe or recently decompensated heart failure.
Multaq should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider experienced in managing heart rhythm disorders. Your provider will evaluate your medical history, current medications, and overall cardiovascular health to determine whether Multaq is an appropriate treatment option for helping maintain a normal heart rhythm and reducing AFib-related complications.
