What is Simbrinza ?
Simbrinza (brinzolamide/brimonidine) is a prescription eye drop used to lower elevated eye pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It combines two medications that work together to reduce intraocular pressure, helping protect the optic nerve and lower the risk of vision loss.
Simbrinza is a prescription ophthalmic medication used to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It combines two active ingredients, brinzolamide and brimonidine, into a single eye drop to provide effective pressure reduction without the use of a beta blocker. Lowering eye pressure is one of the most important steps in slowing the progression of glaucoma and preserving long-term vision.
Brinzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that decreases the amount of fluid produced inside the eye, while brimonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that both reduces fluid production and increases fluid drainage. Together, these complementary actions help lower intraocular pressure more effectively than either medication alone.
Simbrinza is typically administered as one drop into the affected eye or eyes two to three times daily, depending on your healthcare provider's instructions. If you use multiple eye medications, it is generally recommended to wait at least five minutes between different eye drops to ensure each medication is properly absorbed.
Common side effects include blurred vision immediately after use, eye irritation, dry mouth, a bitter or unusual taste, eye redness, and mild eye discomfort. Most side effects are temporary and improve as your eyes adjust to treatment. Patients should avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to reduce the risk of contamination and infection.
Simbrinza is intended for long-term management of glaucoma or ocular hypertension and should be used consistently, even if you do not notice changes in your vision. Regular eye examinations are important to monitor eye pressure and assess how well the medication is working. Your eye care provider will determine whether Simbrinza is the right treatment based on your eye health, medical history, and treatment goals.
