Looking for a tranexamic acid coupon? Tranexamic acid is an inexpensive generic medicine, but the cash price still varies widely from one pharmacy to the next, so comparing before you fill matters. Rx.com checks prices at more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can find a low cash price near you and print or show a free discount coupon at the counter, whether or not you have insurance. What is tranexamic acid and how does it work?
Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic medication, meaning it helps blood clots stay stable so bleeding can slow down. It works as a lysine analog that blocks the activation of plasminogen, the process that would otherwise break clots apart. The oral tablet is sold under the brand name Lysteda and is FDA-approved to treat cyclic heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) in women. An injectable form, Cyklokapron, is FDA-approved for short-term use to reduce or prevent bleeding in people with hemophilia who are having a tooth extraction.
Tranexamic acid is a widely used, well-established medicine and is not a controlled substance. A generic version is available, which is why the cash price is generally low compared with many brand-name drugs.
Tranexamic acid cost and how to save with a coupon
Because tranexamic acid is available as a generic, it is already one of the more affordable prescription options in its category. Even so, the cash price is not the same everywhere. Two pharmacies on the same street can charge noticeably different amounts, so the single biggest way to save is to compare prices before you fill. That is true whether you are uninsured, have a high deductible, or simply want to pay less than your insurance copay.
Rx.com compares cash prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies and gives you a free discount coupon you can use instead of insurance. There is no membership fee to use the coupon. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price near you and pick the pharmacy with the best price. If you prefer the brand-name oral tablet, you can also compare prices for Lysteda.
Alternatives and related medicines
Tranexamic acid belongs to a small group of antifibrinolytic drugs. A closely related option is aminocaproic acid, which works in a similar way to help stabilize clots. If your prescriber wrote for a specific brand, the oral tablet brand is Lysteda and the injectable brand is Cyklokapron; in most cases the generic tranexamic acid is the same medicine at a lower cash price.
Which option is right for you depends on your diagnosis and health history, so this is a conversation to have with your doctor or pharmacist. Whichever one you are prescribed, you can compare cash prices for it on Rx.com to find the lowest available near you.
Safety and side effects
Tranexamic acid should not be used by people who have active blood-clot conditions such as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), or clotting in the brain, or by people with a history of or an inborn tendency toward clots. It should also not be combined with combination hormonal birth control (pills, patches, or rings that contain both estrogen and progestin), because using them together raises the risk of a dangerous clot. There is a risk of arterial or venous blood clots, and with the intravenous form, a risk of seizures. Rare visual changes, including changes in color vision, and a rare eye condition called ligneous conjunctivitis have been reported. People with reduced kidney function usually need a lower dose.
The most common side effects of the oral tablets are headache, sinus and nasal symptoms, back pain, abdominal pain, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue.
