Looking for a simvastatin coupon? Simvastatin is a widely prescribed generic statin, and because it's generic it's already one of the lower-cost cholesterol medicines, but the cash price still varies a lot from one pharmacy to the next. Rx.com compares live simvastatin prices across more than 60,000 pharmacies so you can find today's lowest cost near you. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price and print or show a free coupon at the pharmacy counter.
What is simvastatin and how does it work?
Simvastatin is a generic cholesterol-lowering medicine in the statin family (an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor). It's sold under the brand names Zocor and FloLipid. It works by blocking an enzyme your liver uses to make cholesterol, which lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol.
Doctors prescribe simvastatin, along with diet and exercise, for adults and children age 10 and older with high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), including inherited high cholesterol (heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia). In people at high cardiovascular risk, it is also used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease.
How much does simvastatin cost without insurance?
Because simvastatin is available as a generic, it's usually one of the more affordable cholesterol medicines, even without insurance. But "affordable" isn't the same at every pharmacy, cash prices for the exact same prescription can differ widely between stores in the same town, which is why it pays to compare before you fill.
Rx.com checks live prices at more than 60,000 pharmacies and shows you a free coupon you can use at checkout. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price near you. There's no manufacturer savings card for generic simvastatin, so comparing cash prices is the most reliable way to find the lowest cost.
Simvastatin vs. other statins and alternatives
Simvastatin is one of several statins, and they differ in strength and how they interact with other drugs. Your prescriber chooses based on your cholesterol goals, other medications, and how you tolerate treatment. Related medicines people compare include:
- atorvastatin (Lipitor) and rosuvastatin (Crestor), higher-intensity statins
- pravastatin and lovastatin, other statin options
- ezetimibe-simvastatin, which combines simvastatin with a second cholesterol-lowering medicine
All of these are available as generics on Rx.com. Enter your ZIP to compare prices, and talk with your doctor before switching medications, only a prescriber can decide which statin is right for you.
Simvastatin safety and side effects
The most talked-about risk with statins is muscle problems. Rarely, simvastatin can cause myopathy or a severe muscle breakdown called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to kidney injury. This risk is dose-related and highest at the 80 mg dose, which is reserved only for people who have already taken it safely for 12 months or more. Tell your doctor right away about any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a fever or feel generally unwell.
Simvastatin should not be used if you have active liver disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It interacts with many medicines, including certain other cholesterol drugs, amiodarone, verapamil, and diltiazem, and with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, so dose limits or avoidance may apply. Avoid grapefruit juice, which raises simvastatin levels in the blood. Your doctor may check your liver enzymes; simvastatin can also rarely raise blood sugar.
