What is Pravastatin Sodium ?
Pravachol (pravastatin sodium) is a prescription statin medication used to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol. It is commonly prescribed to help reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in people with high cholesterol or heart disease. Pravachol works best when combined with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and other heart-healthy lifestyle changes.
Pravachol (pravastatin sodium) is a prescription medication that belongs to the statin class of drugs. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver, helping to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol. By improving cholesterol levels, Pravachol can help slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries and reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious cardiovascular complications.
Pravachol is commonly prescribed for adults with high cholesterol, individuals with diabetes or other cardiovascular risk factors, and patients who have already experienced a heart attack or have established heart disease. It may also be used in certain children and adolescents with inherited forms of high cholesterol when lifestyle changes alone are not enough.
Pravachol is typically taken once daily, with or without food, and is available in several strengths to help meet individual cholesterol goals. Compared with some other statins, pravastatin has fewer drug interactions because it is metabolized differently, making it a preferred option for some patients taking multiple medications. Healthcare providers may recommend periodic blood tests to monitor cholesterol levels and liver function while taking the medication.
For the best results, Pravachol should be used as part of a comprehensive heart health plan that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, weight management, and avoiding tobacco use. Because high cholesterol often has no symptoms, it is important to continue taking Pravachol as prescribed, even if you feel well, to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels and lower your long-term risk of cardiovascular disease.
