What actually works for hair loss

Most hair loss in men, and much of it in women, is androgenetic alopecia: an inherited sensitivity to DHT that slowly shrinks hair follicles. It is common, it is gradual, and the earlier you treat it, the more hair you keep.

Two medicines have the strongest evidence. Finasteride lowers DHT to stop the loss, and minoxidil pushes follicles back into growth. Used together, they work better than either alone. Sudden, patchy or scarring hair loss is different and needs an in-person exam.

FAQs

What is the best treatment for male pattern hair loss?
Finasteride and minoxidil have the strongest evidence, and the combination works better than either alone. Dutasteride is a stronger option a provider may consider when finasteride is not enough.
Is a pill or a spray better?
Oral finasteride is the most-studied option. A topical finasteride + minoxidil spray puts both ingredients on the scalp and may expose the body to less finasteride, though it is compounded and not FDA-approved. Your provider helps you choose.
How long does hair loss treatment take to work?
Expect 3 to 6 months for less shedding and early growth and about 12 months for the full result. Results last only while you continue treatment.
When will Rx.com's hair loss treatments be available?
Soon. Already have a prescription? Generic finasteride and minoxidil are inexpensive with a free coupon: see the finasteride and minoxidil pages.
