Ziagen is a prescription-only medication that is used to treat patients diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Ziagen works by decreasing the growth of HIV cells within the body to help the patient’s immune system from receiving HIV related complications including tuberculosis and lymphoma.

  • Mild nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Weight gain around your neck, upper back, breast, or waist
  • Fever, rash, cough, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, joint or muscle aches, unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Dark urine or pale stools, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellow skin or eyes
  • Fast breathing, lightheadedness, dizziness, severe weakness, confusion
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
  • Chest pain that may spread, trouble breathing, unusual sweating, faintness

  • Always practice safe sex, even if your partner also has HIV. If you stop taking this medicine or do not take it as prescribed, you may spread HIV to others. Do not reuse or share needles, or other items, that may have blood or body fluids on them.
