An Abilify Maintena coupon from Rx.com can lower what you pay out of pocket for aripiprazole extended-release injectable suspension, the once-monthly long-acting antipsychotic injection given by a healthcare professional. Abilify Maintena is brand-only right now, so there is no generic version to switch to, and the cash price varies quite a bit from one pharmacy to the next. Enter your ZIP code above to see today's price near you, then bring the free coupon to the pharmacy. It is not insurance, and you can use it whether you have no coverage, have Medicare, or were turned down for the manufacturer's savings card.
What is Abilify Maintena and how does it work?
Abilify Maintena is a long-acting intramuscular (IM) injection of aripiprazole, an atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic. Aripiprazole acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and as an antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors. The extended-release suspension is designed to release medicine slowly over about a month, so one injection replaces daily pill-taking. It is not a controlled substance.
The FDA has approved Abilify Maintena in adults for two uses: treatment of schizophrenia, and maintenance monotherapy treatment of bipolar I disorder. The usual dose is 400 mg injected once a month, no sooner than 26 days after the previous dose, and it can be reduced to 300 mg if you have side effects. A healthcare professional gives the shot into the deltoid or gluteal muscle. It must never be given into a vein or under the skin. If you have not taken aripiprazole before, your provider will have you try oral aripiprazole first to be sure you tolerate it, and you keep taking an oral antipsychotic for 14 days in a row after the first injection. Abilify Maintena is not approved for dementia-related psychosis.
Manufacturer savings card vs. the Rx.com cash coupon
Otsuka runs an official savings card program for Abilify Maintena, described on the manufacturer's own Abilify Maintena website. Like most brand copay cards, it is generally limited to people with commercial (private) insurance, and the terms, eligibility, and any limits vary and change over time, so read the current program rules before you count on it. People with Medicare, Medicaid, or other government coverage are typically not eligible. Otsuka also runs a patient assistance program (Otsuka Patient Assistance) for people who qualify based on income and coverage, which is worth asking about if the drug is out of reach.
The Rx.com coupon is different: it is a free cash-price discount, not insurance and not tied to your coverage type. That makes it useful when you are uninsured, when you have Medicare and cannot use a copay card, or when the manufacturer's card is declined. Cash prices for a brand-only injectable vary by pharmacy, so it pays to compare rather than assume. Enter your ZIP above to see today's price at pharmacies near you. Because a healthcare professional has to administer the injection, ask your clinic how they source the medicine, since some clinics buy and bill for it themselves while others have you fill it at a pharmacy and bring it in.
Alternatives and related aripiprazole options
Aripiprazole comes in several forms, and the right one depends on your diagnosis, how often you want an injection, and what your provider recommends. Do not switch products on your own.
- Abilify and generic aripiprazole are the oral forms taken daily. Oral aripiprazole is also what you use to establish tolerability before your first Maintena injection and for the 14 days after it.
- Abilify Asimtufii is also aripiprazole extended-release injectable suspension, but it is dosed once every two months instead of once a month.
- Aristada is aripiprazole lauroxil, a different prodrug of aripiprazole, and is not interchangeable with Abilify Maintena.
- Invega Sustenna (paliperidone palmitate) and Risperdal Consta (risperidone) are long-acting injectables in the same broad drug class but with different active ingredients.
There is no substitutable generic of Abilify Maintena, so a generic swap is not a savings lever here the way it is with oral aripiprazole. Compare the cash price with your coupon, check the manufacturer's program if you have commercial insurance, and ask your prescriber whether a different form or interval fits your situation.
Safety information you should know
Abilify Maintena carries a boxed warning: elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at increased risk of death. Abilify Maintena is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. The label also warns about cerebrovascular problems including stroke in elderly patients with dementia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia (which may not go away), metabolic changes such as high blood sugar or new diabetes, abnormal cholesterol and weight gain, pathological gambling and other compulsive behaviors, low blood pressure on standing and fainting, low white blood cell counts, seizures, trouble with body temperature regulation, and swallowing difficulty. Aripiprazole can impair thinking and coordination, so be careful driving until you know how it affects you.
Injection-site reactions and akathisia (restlessness) are common. Tell your provider about all your medicines: doses need to be adjusted for CYP2D6 poor metabolizers and when taking CYP3A4 or CYP2D6 inhibitors, and CYP3A4 inducers should be avoided for more than 14 days. Contact your provider promptly about high fever with muscle stiffness and confusion, uncontrollable movements, new urges to gamble or shop or eat compulsively, fainting, or signs of infection.
