What is Definity?
Definity (perflutren lipid microsphere) is an injectable ultrasound contrast agent used to enhance the clarity and definition of echocardiograms. It works by creating gas-filled microbubbles that reflect sound waves, providing better visualization of cardiac ventricles and chambers. Definity is specifically indicated for use in patients with suboptimal echocardiograms who require an improved delineation of the left ventricular border.Side Effects
- Sudden or severe headache, problems with vision, speech, or walking
- Chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
Warnings
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart or blood vessel problems, heart failure, a blood disorder (including anemia or sickle cell disease), diabetes, lung disease, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, pheochromocytoma, or multiple myeloma. Tell your doctor if you have a history of stroke, heart attack, or seizures. Tell your doctor if you have asthma, hay fever, or an allergy to any food or iodine.
