What is Diethylstilbestrol ?

Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic estrogen that was first synthesized in 1938. Historically, it was used to prevent pregnancy complications but was later found to cause a rare vaginal tumor among female offspring exposed in utero, leading to its discontinuation in pregnant women in the early 1970s. DES has been used in the treatment of prostate cancer and breast cancer but is rarely prescribed today due to safer and more effective alternatives.
