Generlac is used to treat or prevent symptoms (such as irritability, change in mood, difficulty concentrating, slurred speech) caused by liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy). It works by decreasing the amount of ammonia in the blood and does not cure the problem but helps to improve mental status.

  • Passing gas, stomach cramps
  • Nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea
  • Stomach pain or cramps
  • Dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, fast or uneven heartbeat
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Confusion, weakness, muscle twitching
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Tell your doctor that you are taking lactulose before you have any medical tests or surgery on your colon or rectum.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have diabetes.
