What is Ethacrynic Acid ?
Ethacrynic acid is a potent loop diuretic primarily used to treat fluid retention (edema) associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease, when an agent with greater diuretic potential than those traditionally used is deemed necessary. Unlike other loop diuretics, ethacrynic acid is a phenoxyacetic acid derivative, not a sulfonamide, making it suitable for patients allergic to sulfa drugs. It functions by inhibiting the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to significant diuresis and natriuresis.
