What is Perampanel ?
Fycompa (perampanel) is a prescription medication used to treat certain types of seizures in people with epilepsy. It works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain to help decrease seizure frequency and improve long-term seizure control.
Fycompa (perampanel) is a prescription anti-seizure medication used to treat partial-onset seizures and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and certain children with epilepsy. It belongs to a class of medications known as antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and is often prescribed alone or in combination with other seizure medications to help improve seizure control.
Fycompa works by blocking AMPA receptors, which are involved in transmitting excitatory signals between nerve cells in the brain. By reducing excessive electrical activity, the medication helps lower the likelihood of seizures while supporting long-term epilepsy management. Its unique mechanism of action makes it a valuable treatment option for patients who require additional seizure control despite other therapies.
The medication is typically taken once daily at bedtime, with or without food. Your healthcare provider will usually begin treatment with a low dose and gradually increase it based on seizure control and how well you tolerate the medication. Because epilepsy treatment is highly individualized, it is important to continue taking Fycompa exactly as prescribed and not stop it suddenly without medical supervision, as doing so may increase the risk of seizures.
Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, irritability, difficulty with balance or coordination, and weight gain. Fycompa also carries a boxed warning for serious psychiatric and behavioral reactions, including aggression, hostility, anger, and mood changes. Patients and caregivers should monitor for unusual changes in behavior and contact a healthcare provider if concerning symptoms develop.
