What is Imatinib Mesylate ?

Imatinib Mesylate, marketed under the name Gleevec among others, is a targeted therapy primarily used in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). It functions as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, specifically blocking the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, which plays a critical role in the proliferation and survival of cancer cells. This medication effectively manages disease progression, but requires careful monitoring for potential side effects such as edema, nausea, and cytopenias.
