Hemangeol (propranolol hydrochloride oral solution) is the only medication FDA-approved specifically to treat proliferating infantile hemangioma that needs systemic therapy, and because it's a brand-only orphan drug with no generic version, families researching it should know its distribution changed in May 2026: Hemangeol is now dispensed exclusively through Anovo Specialty Pharmacy, not typical retail or chain pharmacies, with the manufacturer's Eton Cares support program built into that process. If your child's doctor prescribes Hemangeol, ask them to send the prescription to Anovo Specialty Pharmacy and to confirm current Eton Cares eligibility with you — a standard pharmacy price search won't reflect how this specific product is filled today.

What Is Hemangeol and How Does It Work?

Hemangeol is a brand-name oral solution of propranolol hydrochloride, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker (beta-blocker). It was approved by the FDA in March 2014 (NDA 205410) specifically for proliferating infantile hemangioma requiring systemic treatment, in infants who are between 5 weeks and 5 months old when treatment starts. It's classified as an orphan drug and remains the only FDA-approved product specifically indicated for this use.

Propranolol as an ingredient is also used in adults, under other brand names and as generic tablets or solution, for conditions like high blood pressure, angina, irregular heart rhythms, migraine prevention, and essential tremor. Hemangeol itself, however, is formulated and dosed only for the infantile hemangioma indication — it isn't the product used for those adult conditions.

Hemangeol Cost and Access: Eton Cares Through Anovo Specialty Pharmacy

As of a May 2026 relaunch, Hemangeol's manufacturer, Eton Pharmaceuticals, distributes the product exclusively through Anovo Specialty Pharmacy — it is no longer stocked or filled at typical retail or chain pharmacies. In practice, this means your child's doctor needs to send the prescription directly to Anovo Specialty Pharmacy (by e-prescribing or referral) rather than to a local pharmacy counter, and the usual approach of comparing cash prices at nearby pharmacies does not apply to Hemangeol the way it does for most drugs on this site.

The manufacturer's patient support program, Eton Cares, is now built into that specialty-pharmacy fulfillment process rather than a separate program a family looks up and enrolls in on their own. Eligible commercially insured patients may qualify for no out-of-pocket copay, and expanded patient assistance is available for other situations, but eligibility, costs, and enrollment steps can change — confirm current terms directly with your child's prescriber or with Anovo Specialty Pharmacy / Eton Cares rather than assuming a manufacturer card can simply be presented at a local pharmacy.

There is currently no generic version of Hemangeol available, so the brand-name oral solution remains the only FDA-approved option for this specific indication.

Related Beta-Blockers

Hemangeol's active ingredient, propranolol, is also available under other names and as a generic for adult conditions such as high blood pressure and migraine prevention — see propranolol and the brand Inderal. Other non-selective and selective beta-blockers used for adult cardiovascular conditions include atenolol and nadolol. These are not interchangeable with Hemangeol for infantile hemangioma — Hemangeol is the specific FDA-approved, precisely dosed oral solution for that pediatric indication, and any change in an infant's medication should be made only by their treating provider.

Hemangeol Safety Information

Hemangeol's label does not carry an FDA boxed warning, but it does include several important warnings parents should know. Propranolol can blunt the body's ability to respond to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and mask its warning signs, so the label advises giving each dose with or right after a feeding, withholding doses if the infant isn't feeding well or is ill, and seeking care right away if signs of hypoglycemia appear. It can also slow the heart rate (an average decrease of about 7 beats per minute in trials) and lower blood pressure, and the label specifies stopping treatment if heart rate drops below 80 beats per minute or blood pressure symptoms occur, or if systolic blood pressure falls below 50 mmHg. Because it's a beta-blocker, it should be avoided in infants with asthma, wheezing, or an active lower respiratory infection due to bronchospasm risk.

Hemangeol has not been established as safe and effective in infants with PHACE syndrome or in infants over one year old, and caution is advised in infants with other conditions that can cause low blood sugar. The most common side effects reported include sleep disturbances, diarrhea or other GI upset, and cold hands or feet. This is general information, not medical advice — always follow your child's pediatrician or specialist's specific dosing and monitoring instructions.
