Azathioprine is a medication used in organ transplants and autoimmune diseases. Azathioprine is an immunosuppressive drug which stops the body from attacking itself or rejecting transplanted organs. Azathioprine is a generic drug also sold under the brand names Imuran and Azasan. Azathioprine has been available for over 50 years. In the treatment of autoimmune disease and organ transplants, azathioprine use is common.

  • Sores or white patches on your lips, mouth, or throat
  • Hair loss
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Sores on the skin, swollen glands, abnormal skin growths
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
  • Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 when you are outdoors. Wear protective clothing and hats, and stay out of direct sunlight between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
