Levalbuterol is a medication designed to help individuals who experience breathing difficulties due to lung diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These conditions can cause symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. Levalbuterol belongs to a class of medications known as beta agonists, which work by relaxing the muscles around the airways. This relaxation helps to open the air passages in the lungs, allowing for easier breathing and relief from discomfort.
It is important to use levalbuterol exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Your doctor will determine the right dose for you based on your specific needs. While levalbuterol can effectively control symptoms, it does not cure asthma or COPD, so it is essential to continue using it even if you feel well. If your symptoms worsen or if you find that you need to use your medication more frequently, contact your doctor for advice.
Common side effects may include nervousness, shaking, or increased heart rate. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, reach out to your healthcare provider. Always follow your prescriber's directions carefully, and do not hesitate to ask questions if you are unsure about how to use the medication or if you have concerns about your treatment.
