What is Metronidazole?
Metronidazole is a prescription antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat a wide variety of bacterial and parasitic infections. Common uses include bacterial vaginosis (BV), trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection), C. difficile colitis, intra-abdominal infections, H. pylori eradication (as part of combination therapy), dental infections, and certain skin and soft tissue infections. Metronidazole works by entering bacterial and protozoal cells and disrupting their DNA, preventing them from replicating and causing them to die. Available as oral tablets, capsules, extended-release tablets, and topical gel or cream for BV and rosacea. A licensed provider can prescribe metronidazole online through Rx.com for BV, trichomoniasis, or other appropriate infections.Side Effects

A licensed provider can prescribe metronidazole online through Rx.com for BV, trichomoniasis, or other appropriate infections. What Is Metronidazole?
Metronidazole (brand names: Flagyl, MetroGel, MetroCream) is a prescription nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. It is one of the most effective and widely used antibiotics for infections in areas of the body with low oxygen levels — such as the gut, pelvis, and oral cavity. It is also available as a topical gel for bacterial vaginosis and rosacea.
What Does Metronidazole Treat?
- Bacterial vaginosis (BV) — oral or vaginal gel formulation
- Trichomoniasis — sexually transmitted parasitic infection
- Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) colitis — antibiotic-associated intestinal infection
- Intra-abdominal infections — often combined with aerobic antibiotic coverage
- H. pylori eradication — part of triple or quadruple therapy for peptic ulcer disease
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) — part of combination antibiotic regimen
- Dental / oral infections — anaerobic dental abscesses
- Amebiasis and giardiasis — intestinal parasitic infections
- Rosacea — topical formulations (MetroGel, MetroCream)
How Does Metronidazole Work?
After entering bacterial or protozoal cells, metronidazole is chemically reduced to a toxic radical that attacks and breaks DNA strands, halting replication and causing cell death. This mechanism is highly effective against organisms that thrive in low-oxygen (anaerobic) environments.
Dosage Overview
- BV (oral): 500 mg twice daily for 7 days, or 750 mg ER once daily for 7 days
- Trichomoniasis: 2g single dose (or 500 mg twice daily x 7 days)
- C. diff (mild-moderate): 500 mg three times daily for 10–14 days
- H. pylori: 500 mg twice daily with other agents as part of combination therapy
Alcohol Warning
Do not drink alcohol during treatment or for 48 hours after the last dose — metronidazole causes a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol (severe flushing, nausea, vomiting, headache).
