What is Alprostadil?
Alprostadil is a prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analog used primarily for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) and maintaining patency of the ductus arteriosus in newborns with congenital heart defects. It promotes vasodilation and inhibits platelet aggregation by relaxing smooth muscle tissue and dilating blood vessels, which facilitates blood flow. Alprostadil is administered via injection or as a urethral suppository.Side Effects

Warnings
- Should not be used by individuals with sickle cell anemia, trait, or leukemia, or by those with penile implants.
- May cause penile fibrosis; regular follow-up with a physician is recommended to detect penile changes.
- Users should be warned about the potential for a prolonged erection, which can require urgent medical attention.
- Do not use in cases of known hypersensitivity to alprostadil or any of the excipients.
- Appropriate use for erectile dysfunction should not involve concurrent treatment with other agents for erectile dysfunction.
