Capron DM (carbinoxamine maleate and dextromethorphan hydrobromide) is a prescription combination medication used to temporarily relieve cough and upper respiratory symptoms caused by the common cold, seasonal allergies, or other respiratory conditions. It contains carbinoxamine, a first-generation antihistamine that helps reduce sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and nasal irritation, along with dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant that works on the brain's cough center to help reduce the urge to cough.
Capron DM is commonly prescribed for patients experiencing persistent cough accompanied by allergy or cold symptoms. While it can help improve comfort during illness, it does not treat the underlying cause of a viral infection or shorten the duration of a cold. The medication is intended to provide temporary symptom relief while the body recovers.
Capron DM is available as an oral liquid and should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Because carbinoxamine may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or slowed reaction time, patients should use caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them. Alcohol and other medications that cause drowsiness may increase these effects and should be avoided unless approved by a healthcare provider.
As with other cough and cold medications, Capron DM should not be used longer than recommended. Patients should contact their healthcare provider if symptoms persist, worsen, are accompanied by a high fever, or if the cough lasts for more than several weeks. When used appropriately, Capron DM can help relieve bothersome cough and allergy-related symptoms, making it easier to rest and recover.
