Alfuzosin HCl Extended-Release (Uroxatral) is a prescription medication used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly affects older men. As the prostate enlarges, it can place pressure on the urethra, leading to urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, incomplete bladder emptying, and waking at night to urinate.

Alfuzosin belongs to a class of medications known as alpha-1 blockers. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, allowing urine to flow more easily and reducing urinary obstruction. While alfuzosin helps improve urinary symptoms and quality of life, it does not shrink the prostate or stop the progression of BPH. Some patients may require additional medications if prostate enlargement continues over time.

The medication is typically taken as one extended-release tablet once daily immediately after the same meal each day. The tablet should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, or split, as doing so may affect how the medication is released. Many patients begin to notice symptom improvement within several days to a few weeks of starting treatment.

Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, upper respiratory infections, and low blood pressure, particularly when standing up quickly. Because alfuzosin can cause lightheadedness or fainting, especially after the first few doses, patients should rise slowly from sitting or lying positions. Although uncommon, a prolonged or painful erection (priapism) requires immediate medical attention. Patients should also inform their eye surgeon before cataract surgery, as alfuzosin may increase the risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS).
