What is Dutasteride ?
Dutasteride (Avodart) is a prescription medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. It is also commonly prescribed off-label to treat male pattern hair loss by lowering levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for prostate enlargement and hair follicle miniaturization.
Dutasteride (Avodart) is a prescription medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged and causes urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, difficulty starting urination, and the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. It is also widely prescribed off-label for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) because of its ability to significantly reduce levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone most closely linked to hair follicle shrinkage.
Dutasteride belongs to a class of medications known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Unlike finasteride, which blocks one form of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, dutasteride blocks both Type I and Type II 5-alpha reductase, resulting in a more substantial reduction in DHT levels. Lower DHT levels can help shrink the prostate over time, improve urinary symptoms, reduce the risk of urinary retention and prostate surgery, and slow or reverse hair loss in many men.
For BPH, dutasteride is typically taken once daily and may be prescribed alone or in combination with an alpha-blocker such as tamsulosin for additional symptom relief. When prescribed for hair loss, treatment is also usually once daily, although several months of consistent use may be needed before noticeable improvements in hair growth occur. Continued treatment is generally necessary to maintain results.
Common side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, reduced semen volume, breast tenderness or enlargement, and difficulty with ejaculation. These side effects are generally uncommon and may improve over time or after discontinuing treatment. Dutasteride should not be handled by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as the medication can be absorbed through the skin and may harm a developing male fetus.
