What is Atovaquone ?
Atovaquone is a synthetic compound classified as a hydroxynaphthoquinone, which exhibits antiparasitic properties, primarily used as an antimalarial and for the prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP). It functions by inhibiting mitochondrial electron transport in parasites, effectively disrupting their energy production. Atovaquone is often administered in combination with proguanil under the brand name Malarone® to enhance its efficacy against malaria.
