What Is Uretron D/S and How Does It Work?
Uretron D/S is a combination product built around methenamine, a mild urinary antiseptic that works best when urine is acidic, paired with sodium phosphate monobasic (a urinary acidifier), phenyl salicylate (a local urinary tract analgesic), methylene blue (a mild urinary antiseptic that also colors urine), and hyoscyamine sulfate (an anticholinergic that relaxes bladder muscle spasm).
It's labeled for symptoms of irritative voiding and for relief of local urinary tract symptoms—inflammation, spasm/hypermotility, and pain—that go along with lower urinary tract infections, as well as urinary symptoms caused by diagnostic procedures. It is important to understand what it is not: Uretron D/S is a symptomatic, adjunct product, not a primary antibiotic. It does not replace a systemic antibiotic when you have a confirmed bacterial UTI.

Uretron D/S Alternatives and Related Drugs
Depending on what your provider is treating, a few related medications may come up in the same conversation:
- Methenamine is the urinary antiseptic ingredient in Uretron D/S, also available on its own.
- Hyoscyamine is the anticholinergic ingredient in Uretron D/S, also prescribed alone for bladder spasm and other conditions.
- Phenazopyridine is a different urinary tract analgesic often used short-term for pain and burning with a UTI (it also discolors urine, orange-red rather than blue-green).
- Nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole are systemic antibiotics actually used to treat a confirmed bacterial UTI—ask your provider whether you need one of these in addition to symptom relief.
Note: because Uretron D/S contains methenamine, it should not be combined with sulfa-containing antibiotics like trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole without your provider's guidance, since the combination can cause a precipitate to form in urine.
Uretron D/S Safety Information
Uretron D/S does not carry an FDA boxed warning. Because of its anticholinergic (hyoscyamine) component, it should be used with caution or avoided in people with glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, obstructive disease of the GI or urinary tract, or certain cardiac conditions such as tachyarrhythmias; in obstructive uropathy it can cause acute urinary retention. The methylene blue component will turn urine blue-green, which is harmless but worth knowing about in advance, and it carries a risk of serotonin syndrome if combined with serotonergic medications such as SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs. It should be avoided in severe kidney or liver impairment, and the labeling advises against use in pregnancy and in infants because of the methylene blue component.
