What is Adakveo?
Adakveo (crizanlizumab-tmca) is a monoclonal antibody medication developed for reducing the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises in individuals with sickle cell disease ages 16 and older. It works by blocking P-selectin, a cell adhesion molecule involved in blood vessel inflammation and blockages. Administered via intravenous infusion, Adakveo helps to prevent the painful episodes and complications associated with these crises.Side Effects
- Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sweating, trouble breathing, tiredness
- Chest pain or discomfort, confusion, headache, numbness or tingling in the face, arms, or legs, trouble walking or speaking
- Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
Warnings
- Do not stop using this medicine suddenly. Your doctor will need to slowly decrease your dose before you stop it completely.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. This medicine may affect certain medical test results.
- Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
- This medicine may cause infusion-related reactions, which can be life-threatening and require medical attention.
