What Is Endari and How Does It Work?
Endari is a prescription-only, pharmaceutical-grade form of the amino acid L-glutamine, taken as an oral powder mixed into a cold or room-temperature beverage or into food before each dose. The FDA approved it in July 2017 for adult and pediatric patients 5 years of age and older with sickle cell disease, based on a 230-patient trial that showed fewer pain crises, fewer hospitalizations, and fewer hospital days compared with placebo over 48 weeks.
Endari is a preventive, twice-daily maintenance therapy dosed by body weight (5–15 grams per dose) — it is not used to treat a pain crisis once it has already started, and it is not FDA-approved for other hemoglobinopathies.
