Lorazepam is a medication used to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia, and seizures. Lorazepam belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines. Lorazepam is a generic medication also available under the trade name Ativan. Lorazepam first became available in the US in 1977 by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Lorazepam use is common in the treatment of anxiety and seizures.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, lung or breathing problems (including COPD, sleep apnea), or a history of drug or alcohol abuse, depression, mental problems, or seizures.
  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly. Your doctor will need to slowly decrease your dose before you stop it completely.
  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.
