Side Effects

It belongs to a class of medications known as nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), which work by preventing the hepatitis B virus from making copies of itself. By reducing the amount of virus in the body, entecavir helps protect the liver from ongoing damage and lowers the risk of long-term complications such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
Entecavir does not cure hepatitis B, but it is highly effective at suppressing viral replication. Many patients experience significant reductions in viral load, improvements in liver enzyme levels, and decreased liver inflammation while taking the medication. Long-term treatment may be necessary to keep the virus under control, and your healthcare provider will monitor your response with regular blood tests to assess liver function and hepatitis B viral levels.
The medication is typically taken once daily on an empty stomach, at least two hours before or two hours after eating. Taking entecavir consistently at the same time each day is important for maintaining effective viral suppression and reducing the risk of antiviral resistance. Patients should not stop taking entecavir without consulting their healthcare provider, as hepatitis B can become significantly worse after treatment is discontinued.
Common side effects include headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and stomach discomfort. Although uncommon, serious side effects may include lactic acidosis and severe liver problems. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience unusual weakness, difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark-colored urine. Regular monitoring helps ensure the medication remains both safe and effective throughout treatment.
