Glimepiride is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Glimepiride belongs to a class of medications called sulfonylurea drugs. Glimepiride stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin. Glimepiride is a generic medication also marketed under the brand name Amaryl sold by Sanofi-Aventis. Glimepiride use was approved by the FDA in 1995. In the treatment of type 2 diabetes, the used of glimepiride is common. Glimepiride is not used to treat type 1 diabetes.
