Vancomycin HCl is an antibiotic that is primarily used to treat colitis, which is an inflammation of the intestine that can occur after taking antibiotics. This condition is caused by certain bacteria, and vancomycin specifically targets these bacteria in the intestines. It is important to note that vancomycin will not work for infections in other parts of the body when taken by mouth, and it is not effective against viral infections like colds or the flu. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can lead to future infections that are harder to treat.
Vancomycin comes in the form of capsules or a liquid solution that you take by mouth. It is essential to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully regarding how to take this medication. You should take it at the same times each day to help remember your doses. If you start to feel better, it is still important to finish the entire course of the medication to ensure the infection is completely cleared and to prevent bacteria from becoming resistant to antibiotics.
Common side effects of vancomycin may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, headache, and back pain. If you experience severe side effects or symptoms like a sore throat, fever, or rash, you should contact your doctor immediately. Always follow your prescriber’s directions when taking vancomycin to ensure safe and effective treatment.
