What is praziquantel and how does it work?
Praziquantel is an oral anthelmintic (antiparasitic) medicine. It is FDA-approved to treat schistosomiasis caused by all Schistosoma species (S. mekongi, S. japonicum, S. mansoni, and S. haematobium) and infections with the liver flukes Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini, in patients aged 1 year and older. It works by damaging the outer surface of the parasite so the body can clear it.

Important safety information
Praziquantel should not be used in ocular cysticercosis, because destroying the parasite in the eye can cause irreversible damage. It should also not be taken with strong CYP450 inducers such as rifampin, which can lower praziquantel levels enough to make treatment ineffective; rifampin is generally stopped about four weeks before praziquantel is given. Praziquantel commonly causes dizziness and drowsiness, so you should not drive or operate machinery on the day you take it or the day after.
Extra caution is needed in people with reduced liver function or severe heart rhythm problems. Praziquantel does not carry a boxed warning.
