Omeprazole is a medication that helps treat various digestive conditions. It is commonly prescribed for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to heartburn and potential damage. Omeprazole works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach produces, allowing the esophagus to heal and preventing further damage. It can also be used to treat ulcers in the stomach or intestines and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid. For those who experience frequent heartburn, omeprazole is available over-the-counter. Common side effects may include headache, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. It’s important to follow your prescriber’s directions carefully when taking omeprazole. This ensures you take the right amount and duration for your specific needs. If you have any questions or concerns about how to take this medication, be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist for guidance.
