Clobetasol propionate is a super-high-potency (Class I) topical corticosteroid. The emollient formulation (originally sold as the brand Temovate E, now discontinued in the U.S.) delivers the same active steroid in a moisturizing base. Applied to the skin, it reduces the inflammation, redness, and itching caused by corticosteroid-responsive skin disorders.
It is FDA-approved to relieve the inflammatory and itchy (pruritic) manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, such as eczema and dermatitis, in patients 12 years and older. It is also approved for the topical treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque-type psoriasis, but only in patients 16 years and older. Clinicians also prescribe it off-label for other steroid-responsive inflammatory skin conditions, including lichen planus, lichen sclerosus, and discoid lupus. Safety and important precautions
