Some individuals with psoriasis may also experience a related condition known as psoriatic arthritis, which affects the joints. The underlying cause of psoriasis is linked to a problem with the immune system, leading to an accelerated process where skin cells rise to the surface much faster than normal. This condition can be challenging to diagnose, as it may resemble other skin diseases. Psoriasis can persist for a long time, with symptoms that can flare up and then improve. Factors such as infections, stress, dry skin, and certain medications can worsen the symptoms. While psoriasis typically occurs in adults and may run in families, a variety of prescription treatments are available.
